Overuse Injuries

What are overuse injuries?

Overuse injuries can be described as a set of injuries that begin gradually and slowly worsen over time, and are directly related to repetitive movements.  These injuries are not typically a result of an acute or traumatic incident, but rather specific repetitive movements over a longer period of time.  Overuse injuries begin slowly but eventually lead to inflammation, decreased mobility, pain and scar tissue formation.  Certain types of athletes or career fields may pose a greater risk of experiencing an overuse injury, such as runners, swimmers, carpenters, or mechanics.  Even a simple task such as typing can lead to an overuse injury.

Some common overuse injuries include but are not limited to the following:

  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow
  • Shin splints
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Jumper’s Knee
  • Iliotibial Band Syndrome

How can overuse injuries be prevented or treated once they begin?

Although repetitive movements may not be able to be avoided, certain steps can be taken to prevent injury.  Stretching frequently, taking breaks, and getting evaluated early are great ways of preventing these injuries from worsening.  Doctors Andy Risvold, Mike Branitski, and Jess Rasmussen work on many patients of all activity levels and career fields, and are always eager to help patients not only take back control over pain, but also to help to prevent it from occurring in the first place.  Getting adjusted regularly as well as implementing soft tissue therapies can help to prevent and treat overuse injuries.  Dr. Mike treats patients at our Minneapolis and Eden Prairie locations, while Dr. Andy and Dr. Jess treat out of our Minneapolis location.  Dr. Jess is also certified in ART (Active Release Technique), which is a soft-tissue technique used specifically to treat overuse injuries.  If you think you may be experiencing symptoms related to an overuse injury, call one of our offices today!
