Sciatica Q&A

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition that develops when the sciatic nerve, becomes irritated or “pinched,” often as a result of inflammation around the spine. The sciatic nerve travels from the lower back down both legs, exiting the spine between two vertebrae. Sometimes, the discs located in this area of the spine will bulge or even become herniated as a result of injury or strain, causing inflammation that presses on the nerves and causes symptoms like pain, numbness and weakness that can radiate from the lower back through the buttocks and legs. Sciatica can occur in one or both legs, and the discomfort can become severe enough to interfere with walking, sitting and even sleeping.

Why does Sciatica occur?

Sciatica often develops after periods of prolonged sitting or standing, when muscle strain “pulls” the spine out of alignment, resulting in bulging or herniated discs. Repetitive twisting, lifting and bending can also cause sciatica, as can a slip-and-fall accident, a sports injury, a workplace-related accident or a car accident. Sciatica is most common among those who are sedentary or overweight.

How can Well Adjusted help relieve Sciatica?

Well Adjusted utilizes gentle spinal adjustment techniques aimed at restoring the normal positions of vertebrae and discs so inflammation and nerve irritation are relieved. As the nerve compression is relieved, normal nerve signaling is also restored, relieving the pain, numbness, burning and other symptoms that occur when the sciatic nerve is compressed. Regular chiropractic adjustments can prevent recurring sciatica pain.
